Yesterday,
a scare with the cats:
    hours of anxious waiting,
    hours of driving, thirsty for reassurance,
    hundreds of dollars,
    hundreds of tears.
and suddenly,
all is well.

Just like that,
all is well–
we are home–
    the cats more appreciative of rugs and walls and water dishes
        where they're supposed to be,
    and we more appreciative of fur and purring
        and cat toys everywhere in our way.

We are reminded,
again,
that this will not always be so.
