The 60-Second Sabbath

Dirk deVries

The Small

Why so much comfort
in my cat's jaw
jammed with intention, affection against mine?

Why so much comfort
in the squawking, congregating of crows
in the crowns of evening trees?

Why so much comfort
in the noise of my partner prepping pizza in the kitchen
while I drift, drowse on the couch?

Why so much comfort
in the breeze easing off the balcony
while I stretch shirtless, sideways across the bed?

Why so much comfort
in the glow of a single, dancing flame
in a rustic metal lantern on the wall?

Why so much comfort
in the small?
