The 60-Second Sabbath

Victory Lap

At the beginning of what we call "Holy Week"
(but might better be called "Horror Week–
a week of betrayal and humiliation),
he rides into town on a donkey.
We see this as a sign of humility.

But here's a fascinating bit
of historical trivia:
after winning a battle,
riding a donkey
was a sign of victory
for the conquering king–
the equivalent of today's "victory lap."

He's already won.
