Thomas Merton speaks poetically
of the "voice" of the rain:
"…all that speech pouring down,
selling nothing,
judging nobody,
drenching…"
I delight in rain's intentional purposelessness.
"I am here for my own sake,"
says the rain.
"I am eternal.
I am life.
"Close your eyes and listen:
hiss, plash, drip, gurgle.
I am a symphony:
hear the joining of a million drops.
I play leaves and boards
and glass and dirt
and metal and pavement–
a thousand sounds a second,
a score of a million notes–
my ultimate, original, ever-new orchestration.
"Step out of your shelter
and feel me;
let me play you, too."
