The 60-Second Sabbath

Dirk deVries

Two Types of People

I've come to believe
there are two types of people,
the divisive
and the unifying.

Pay attention to those around you–
    what they say,
    how they act:
do you conclude your interactions
with a greater sense
    of common struggle,
    of essential oneness,
    of heartfelt compassion,

or are you left with the uneasiness
    of disturbing distinctions,
    of mistrust and suspicion,
of the need to conquer, to win?

In the former,
you are hearing the voice of the divine,
in the latter,
the voice of death.

To which voice
attends the world?

Which voice
finds its nest in you?
