The 60-Second Sabbath

Our Unknowing

We have more in common,
you and I,
in our shared unknowing
than in our shared knowing.

We could stand on the stable foundation
of compacted, unanswered questions,
but seem inclined
to stand separately, defiantly,
each on her or his slender tower
of "reliable, proven, God-given" answers,
not realizing how we sway
to the winds of culture, fear and self-interest.

No.

Our questioning–
our unknowing
unifies us,
gathers us into a truer faith
transcending gender,
    ethnicity,
    religion,
    orientation,
    social standing,
    reputation,
    borders.

What we do not know
is so much greater
that what we know.

Spend 60 seconds with God
and you will get this:
    from 60 to zero
    in one dwarfing minute.

The 5% we know
divides us.
The 95% we question
unites us.

Stand with me
in our vast unknowing.

Do you have the courage?
Do you have the faith?
