"Oh, my gawd!"
she squealed.
"It's Jesus!"
And it was,
standing in the doorway,
just as we'd finished another verse of
"Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee."
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"We were just singing about you,"
I said.
"Every week we…
well, we praise you."
He looked puzzled.
"Praise me?" he asked.
"Yes.
We sing songs about you…
about how much we love you…
how great you are…"
I trailed off,
suddenly feeling foolish.
"Um, you know…worshipping you?"
He didn't seem impressed.
"Name one time," he said,
"when I asked you to worship me.
If you recall,
I told you
to follow me.
I believe I was quite clear on that point.
And this," he ended,
"does not look at all
like feeding the poor
and clothing the naked."
He turned and left,
shaking his head.
"Christians,"
he muttered.
