The 60-Second Sabbath

Dirk deVries

One Day

To feel okay about myself
I need to feel superior to others:
    I'm better organized.
    I eat better.
    I attend church.
    I give to charity.
    My opinion is more considered.
    I don't waste money.
I'd look better in those pants.
    I matter more.

But underneath
I know a deeper truth:
    Something is wrong with me.
    If I mattered at all
    I would abandon the scorecard.

Further down,
in a place I've forgotten,
waits the deepest of truths:
    I am beloved of God,
    complete,
    lacking nothing.

One day,
one day,
I will rediscover this.
All measuring shall cease.
Life shall begin.

One day.
