You are salt.
You are light.

Salt flavors.
Light illuminates.

In what was
    are you flavoring
        the world today?
In what ways
    are you illuminating
        the world today?

These are metaphors, of course:
Jesus does not mean
    that you are actually salt,
        nor actually light.

He's saying
    you have an essential role to play
        in making your world
            a more palatable, "well-seasoned" place,
                tastier, more pleasing, more alive.
You have a reason, a purpose;
    you're not called to be bland,
        you're called to be spicy…like God.

He's saying
    you have an essential role to play
        in shining truth and love and joy
            into dark spaces,
                despairing hearts,
                    the murk of loss and sadness.
You have a reason, a purpose;
    you're not called to be dim,
        you're called to be brilliant…like God.

Be tasty.
Be bright.
Be your essential self.
