The 60-Second Sabbath

Homecoming

(Written May 14, 1980.)

The starling parent
Flies to the pines
And lands near the top
On an outstretched branch.

Then,
As if crossing a moat,
They walk the branch bridge
And disappear behind
Pine needle walls.

The visual image of the starling
Is immediately replaced by an audible one:
A faint chorus of excited peeps and squeaks.

I have witnessed a homecoming.
