The 60-Second Sabbath

The Sower and the Seed

The Sower doesn't check the soil first;
they simply throw out the seed,
generously, recklessly,
for everyone, everywhere,
no matter how ready the soil—
at times dry and hard,
at times moist and waiting.

We are that soil,
changing with the seasons of our lives,
with stress and joy,
doubt and contentment,
fear and courage—
but the patient seed waits
through all the moments
when we aren't equipped to receive it
(crusty and resistant)
for the moments
when we are
(eager and expectant).

We wax, we wane,
we sleep, we awaken.
Ever and always, God surrounds us,
even when our awareness
blows away,
dries up,
chokes off.
The seed—the Word
surrounds us
always.

There for all of us,
all the time.
